Three Apache Longbow attack helicopters (AH-64D) of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) have returned to Singapore after a four-year deployment in the United States.

The three helicopters, regarded as the most advanced attack helicopters in the world, touched down at Sembawang Air Base on 26 Jan.

Chief of Air Force Major-General (MG) Lim Kim Choon and other senior air force officers were present at the homecoming ceremony to mark the helicopters' return.

After the Apaches had landed, MG Lim performed a symbolic christening on one of the Apaches by peeling off a decal on the aircraft, revealing the words "First RSAF Apache Home".

Amidst the celebrations, one man was already making plans for the Apaches - Squadron Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) Sew Chun Liang.

"The immediate task is to get the Apache pilots accustomed to the local training areas," said LTC Sew. "For the past few years, we have been operating the aircraft in the US."

"Now that the aircraft are back, we will have to make sure that we operate them safely and effectively in our own training areas."

The Apache will make an appearance at the Asian Aerospace 2006 exhibition, which will be held in Singapore from 21 to 26 Feb.

The public will get an opportunity to get up close to the helicopter.
