To promote greater public awareness of its role in island defence and protection of key installations (KINs), the 6th battallion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (6 SIR) showcased its technological prowess at the Civil Service College (CSC) on 8 May, in conjunction with Public Service Week 2009.
With a 4 "D" mission to deter, detect, deny and deal with potential threats on Singapore's shores, 6 SIR has to remain vigilant round-the-clock.
"Our duty to our country is always ongoing. By showing the public some of our weapons we hope they develop a greater sense of confidence in our SAF (Singapore Armed Forces), especially when it comes to homeland security," Third Sergeant (3SG) Jestyn Koh, a specialist from the 6 SIR Weapons Platoon, told cyberpioneer.
They certainly impressed the crowds, as fascinated guests poured in by the dozens to check out the wide array of equipment on show at the display booth.
Ms Rinkoo Ghosh, a senior learning design specialist at CSC, said of the 6 SIR display: "The booth was just marvellous. The equipment looked amazing and the soldiers seemed to be really well-versed in their subject matter."
She added: "On top of everything else, it really did show that the SAF is ready to take on challenges."
Featured equipment included the Searchcam Mongoose, which comprises a control console and probe, together with a video display and battery packs. This video inspection system boasts movable cameras on the ends of probes controlled by articulation levers that allow personnel to inspect areas of limited access.
The Searchcam Mongoose also boasts unparalleled durability because of its water-cum-all weather resistance.
In addition, 6 SIR also displayed a Retractable Roadblade System - the cornerstone of their "deny" approach to the protection of KINs. This portable system, which allows for rapid deployment, is strategically used in conjunction with other obstacles such as the mobile crash barrier.
Its functions centre around sharp blades that are activated upon contact, shredding the tyres of aggressor vehicles. Able to withstand up to 50 tonnes of force, they can effectively deny any unauthorised vehicles from entering KINs.
Other items on display included taser guns, as well as specialised torchlights and cameras.
