As a young engineer who joined the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) in 1998, Mr Roy Chan did not expect to climb to the echelons of higher management.
In his career spanning almost two decades with DSTA, he has worked on defence systems for the Army, Navy and Air Force, and also served a secondment to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).
I feel that DSTA truly cares for its people and I m one of those who have benefitted from the grooming programmes, said Mr Chan, 42. He is now Programme Director (Land Systems) at DSTA and was awarded a mid-career scholarship to pursue post-graduate studies.
For placing its people at the heart of the organisation, DSTA was awarded the People Excellence Award. DSTA chief executive officer Tan Peng Yam received the award from Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S. Iswaran at the Business Excellence Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner held on 27 Oct.
DSTA won the award for its programmes aimed at allowing staff to chart the course of their careers and training, and for successfully creating a culture for innovation across the organisation.
It also won the Innovation Excellence Award in 2014, making it the only organisation to win both awards in the past five years. Charged with implementing defence technology plans, DSTA acquires defence technology and supplies, and develops defence infrastructure for MINDEF.
The Business Excellence Awards are managed by Spring Singapore, an agency under the Ministry of Trade and Industry that helps local enterprises to grow.
