Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers recently completed a course which provided them with a better understanding of the SAF's joint operations.

This was the new Tri-Service Warfighter Course (TSWC) which replaced the Tri-Service Staff Course.

Sixty officers - 24 from the Army, 32 from the Air Force, three from the Navy and one from the Joint Staff - attended the inaugural TSWC, from 15 May to 2 Jun.

Conducted by the SAF Advanced Schools, TSWC serves as a middle-level integration platform for SAF officers to understand joint operations, with emphasis on Operations-Other-Than-War.

Through case studies and discussions, the officers learned more about island defence, peace operations and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations undertaken by the SAF.

G5 Army's CPT Goh Si Hou, who was the top student in the course, said: "We were privileged to have senior officers share with us their operational experiences, which provided an invaluable insight into the personal and professional challenges we may have to face."

"The course gave us a better perspective on SAF operations. We were given a broad understanding of our regional security situation and how the SAF faced the various challenges," said CPT Patrick Sagaram from 119 Squadron.

He added: "The interaction between my course-mates and me after class or during tutorial discussions gave me a deeper understanding from subject matter expert point of view, rather than the usual textbook and lecture approach."

The officers found the case studies and discussions very useful in helping them understand the subject matter taught during the course.
