The Singapore Army has suspended surface-water proficiency training after an incident on 20 Jun. It will decide whether to proceed, and when to proceed with the training.

Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean said this after officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Army Museum of Singapore on 21 Jun.

A Commando regular officer, Lieutenant (LTA) Lionel Lin Shi Guan, 24, had died after encountering difficulties while undergoing training at the swimming pool in Hendon Camp.

Each trainee was assigned an instructor during the training. When LTA Lin encountered difficulties, his instructor immediately passed him a float and instructed him to swim to the pool s edge.

LTA Lin went below the surface of the water while swimming towards the edge of the pool. The instructor, who was next to him in the water, lifted him up and helped him to the pool's edge where he was given immediate medical attention.

He was then rushed to the Hendon Medical Centre at about 4pm. After two doctors' attempts to resuscitate him at the medical centre, LTA Lin was evacuated to Changi General Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4.59pm.

Mr Teo expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the late LTA Lin.

He said: "MINDEF will conduct an inquiry into the circumstances and take whatever measures that are necessary."
