The RSS Persistence, a Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Landing Ship Tank (LST), departed for Sumatra, Indonesia, today.

This is the second LST to be deployed to Indonesia.

RSS Persistence was sent off at Changi Naval Base by Minister of State for Defence and National Development, Mr Cedric Foo.

On board are 196 personnel, part of Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) medical and engineer teams. The LST is also carrying engineering equipment, transport vehicles, and food and medical supplies from the Singapore Red Cross.

It is expected to arrive off Meulaboh on the evening of 6 Jan, and will serve as another helicopter staging area for the SAF humanitarian assistance task force's operations.

Speaking to the media on 3 Jan, Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, said that he believed this LST, which could operate offshore, would be a helpful resource for the Indonesians.

He added: "Our activities are focused on Meulaboh because there's still a dire need for autonomous facilities which can operate offshore, as indicated by the relief co-ordinator."

The first LST, the RSS Endurance, already began relief operations in Meulaboh on 3 Jan.
