The UNMIN was formed to oversee the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Nepalese Government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
Its mandate includes monitoring the management of arms under the ceasefire agreement, providing technical support for the election of a Constituent Assembly, deploying electoral monitors and reporting on the conduct of the elections.
Two Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers, Major (MAJ) Ong Chuan Hian and MAJ Siva Balan Subramanyam, will be deployed in the arms monitoring component. They will leave for Nepal on 11 May.
This deployment is part of Singapore's continuing efforts to support UN peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.
To date, Singapore has contributed some 1,500 SAF and 400 Singapore Police Force personnel to over 10 UN peacekeeping missions, including the ongoing UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).
