The work of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami has been chronicled in a book, Reaching Out Operation Flying Eagle .
It tells the story of how the SAF carried out its mission to provide immediate relief and assistance after the tsunami from the planning, to the logistics, to the action on the ground.
The book was launched on SAF Day, 1 Jul, at the SAFTI Military Institute.
Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Ng Yat Chung, presented President S R Nathan with the first copy of the book, and also introduced the President to Staff Sergeant Muhamad Azam Aziz, who is featured on the cover of the book.
Mr David Boey, a defence correspondent with a local newspaper, who was commissioned by the Ministry of Defence to write the book, said the book wrote itself , since the people he interviewed had engaging stories to tell.
I hope the book will tell the story of how the SAF performed in its largest overseas operation, and give people greater knowledge of what the SAF is capable of, said Mr Boey.
'Reaching Out Operation Flying Eagle' is dedicated to the men and women of the SAF who had contributed to the disaster relief aid.
A total of 15,000 copies of the book have been printed and all participants of the operation will receive a copy.
